League Rules 2012

Urban Bocce Ball League - 2012
The Urban Bocce Ball League (UBBL) rules are as follows:
1.       Time/Locations:
2.       Rules/Scoring
3.       Games
4.       Weather
5.       Teams
6.       Uniforms
7.       Playoffs

1. Time/Locations:
Time: All games will be played on Wednesdays starting at 7pm sharp. If a team is more than 15 minutes late without adequately communicating this to the opposing team in advance then they will start the first game down 3 points. Every additional 15 minutes is another three points and any team later than 45 minutes forfeits the first game.
Locations: The schedule will list all field location for play. Please consult the following below for gathering  points.
Boston Common (Park Street): Meet just outside of the Park Street redline and green line entrance/exit areas.
Cambridge Common (Harvard Square): Meet in the large bench area where the large statue is.
Danehy Park (Porter Square): Meet directly above the playground at the picnic benches located on Sherman Street where there is a parking lot.
Esplanade (Charles/MGH): Meet to the right of the walkway coming down from Charles/MGH as we will try to play on the fields near the hospital or else walk down to the hatch shell area.
Greenway (Haymarket): Meet at the location just across from Goody Glover outside the Haymarket T stop area.
Liberty Park (Davis Square): Meet at the top of the park where the round stone building is.

2. Rules/Scoring:
Rules: Due to the terrain differences, play everything as it lies. Typically bocce ball rules apply in that after the pallino is thrown, the same player will throw his first bocce ball. The purpose of the game is to get your bocce balls as close as possible to the pallino. After the first player has thrown his first bocce ball, he is considered "inside" because his ball is closer to the pallino than the other teams balls. The other team are considered "outside." Whenever a team is considered "inside," they will forfeit their turn throwing bocce balls. The "outside" team players will take turns throwing their bocce balls until one of theirs gets closer to the pallino than the "inside" team. After all teams have thrown their bocce balls, the team that is "inside" will be awarded points. One point will be awarded to this team for every ball that is closer to the pallino than the other team's ball. After the points are awarded, the frame is completed. Start a new frame by a player from the winning frame tossing the pallino and the first bocce ball. A game is won when a team reaches 11 points. Play as many frames as necessary until a team reaches this point level. All teams must win by at least 2 points.
Trash talking is most certainly allowed but not when a person is about to throw the ball.

3. Games:
All teams will play 2 games each week with the possibility for a third game. There is 3 total points available per matchup each week. A total of three games can be played if each team wins one of the first two games. Each game is worth one point unless one team wins the first two games at which point it's a sweep and they get all three points without having to play the third game. Or else a third game is played and worth one additional point.
The league will consist of 8 regular season games and three weeks of playoffs.

4. Weather:
The league will always attempt to play games regardless of the weather. This is a rain or shine league and it will only be cancelled if there is severe thunderstorms that contain lightning. An email notice will go out no later than 5pm if there is to be a cancellation. If you don't get one then expect the games to be played.

5. Teams:
Teams are compromised of a two man team for play. However, teams can have an all time alternate for weeks when one or both of you can't make it. This person can also be worked into game play with the other two players so long as its communicated to the other team in advance via email as to which two players will play all three potential games that week. Thus game one will be player A & B, game two will be player B & C and the third game will be player A & C if needed. If this is not communicated prior to the start of the games then the other team can prevent the switching of players if they feel it's done to create an unfair advantage based on a players skills that evening.
A team must play with two players for a game unless the other team allows someone to play solo. However, only one true member of a team must be present as outside guest players not on the roster are allowed to play but only for a maximum of two different weeks. Sorry no ringers allowed if you start the season and your partner just isn't cutting it.

6. Uniforms:
Team uniforms and overall spirit is greatly encouraged. There is pretty much no bounds on what you'd like to do on this except remember that we will be in public parks for all to view.

7. Playoffs:
There will be a three week 8 team playoff at the end of the season for the four best teams in each division. The highest ranked team in each division will play the lowest ranked team in the other division and accordingly so for the other places. After which teams will play based on the bracket structure. The number two ranked team will always be placed in the bracket side opposite of the team that finished first in their division.
For those that don't make playoffs we will have our first ever horses ass playoffs. Basically, all other teams will play based on ranks similar above but from worst to best. Ultimately, if you lose you will continue on each week to play another team that lost until the worst team is determined.

Teams/Divisions Breakdown

Below is the list of teams and divisions.

Playoffs!!!

It came down to the last week for a couple teams but playoffs have been figured out for next week. After having gone to the second tie breaker for teams (forfeits), the following is the schedule. Team rankings are included so there is no confusion and all higher ranked teams are the home team and responsible for balls. It will be a best of three series.

Additionally, there will be a Horse's Ass award this year so good luck in not being the worst team in the league this year to those involved. Also, if you sadly lose then feel free to call out another team that lost to play the following week in what I will call the Beer Games. You'll show up next week so all have fun and the losing team buys the first round of beers for the other team. There will be a prize for the team that wins the most Beer Games games.

To be fair to all players and teams, the games must be played at the same location as everyone else, no exceptions. All games will be to 11 (Win by 2) so make sure you are there on time.  With that said, good luck to all.

Standings!!!

Below are the standing with only two games left till Playoffs! The two bottom teams will sadly not make them and instead play a game to avoid being this year's horses ass. All still have a chance for glory and remember, if you're not first, you're last. Any questons or concerns then voice them asap.

2011 Full Schedule and Teams

Hello All,

Even though we're already a couple weeks into the season and going just fine, here is the full schedule. As per usual the later weeks in the season for field location will be based on player feedback.

Standings

Standings Thus Far:
If anything seems wrong then let me know and I'll adjust as I had to use some Miss Cleo action to get this together due to a lack of team feedback. Don't worry thou as I used a Louisiana accent, as in 'You gonna die!' rather than the Jamaican accent which makes all the difference in accuracy.

Winners and Next Week Info

Hello All,

We managed to get our first week in although it was a close one. Great job by all that stepped up in the uniform area.

There is also those that are truly excited for bocce like Becky.

Congrats to last weeks winners. Team Tunes took down multiple powers to claim the points, while Nice (Bocce) Balls...TWSS secured a victory as well. Don't Stop Boccelievin' was singing all night long to their victory and a very eurotrashy looking Bochismo also secured the win.
However, a constellation win is going out to team Voltron as a new rule is being put into place. If a team doesn't field a complete team it will be a forfeit. However, if partial people do show then a friendly game can be played until all head to the bars.

Please make it known in advance to the other team if a forefit will take place while also posting it on the blog under the most recent post so there is no confusion or back tracking by teams.

On another note, it got a little dark out last time so its important that you show up on time. If not, all you might see is some reflective players like so:

As always a staple of the league is a nice drink or two. As evident by the following (Mollie only joined for the drinks, I think?).

Last but not least. I will be away this week enjoying Bonnaroo so Jeff will be acting commishiner. If there is any weather issues he will be making the call to play or not.
Stay classy all!

Weather

If no posts are made prior to 6 PM on the night of the games indicating they are canceled then all games are on as scheduled. If of course, once we all get there and if the weather is unplayable for whatever reason then we will still have drinks at the bar to celebrate our attempt at bocce. It's a win win situation either way. So let's get ready to bocce tonight as the rain shouldn't affect things too much hopefully.

Teams and Schedule

After much procrastination on most peole's part we have everything squared away for the start of the season. We did lose one team that could no longer make the commitment while 3 others came close to being booted.

All in all, we will have 11 teams for the leagues first season. Seeing as that I don't like bye weeks when it comes to Bocce, we are going to get a little creative to ensure all play each week. Therefore, I proudly introduce the Mega Game. The Mega Game will be between three teams of which there will be one played each week. All teams will play 3 Mega Games throughout the season. The winner of the Mega Game claims two wins for the victory while the others get a giant goose egg.

Teams:
Schedule:

The team listed first is considered the home team and must provide the bocce balls. Additionally, if you are in the Mega Game then the third team also needs to bring booce balls.

Fields:

All the following fields were chosen based on their ability to be reached within walking distance from a T stop. Any involvement with buses are currently vetoed based on the irregular schedules of buses. If you'd like to suggest other locations that meet these criteria for the TBD fields then please let me know.

Boston - Boston Common (Park Street T Stop) - We will meet right near the redline entrace of the park at 7:30 and then walk to an agreeable site for all to play at.

Cambridge - Cambridge Common (Harvard Square T Stop) - It's not overlly big so you should see people.

Liberty - Liberty Park (Davis Square T Stop) - Meet on the powderhouse side of the park.

Sennott - Sennott (Central Square T Stop) - Meet at the closest entrace point off of Norfolk Street.

Danehy - Danehy Park (Porter Square T Stop) - Meet at the playground across from the projects and the same street as Jose's.

Esplanade - The Esplanade (Charles/MGH T Stop) - Meet at the end of the pedestrian footpath bridge.

If you need directions to any of these places then I suggest that you google it.

Team Names

Ok slackers. A lot of people haven't signed up their team names and roster. You have until May 25th to submit your information or be booted from the league. No excusses!

Teams thus far:
  • Bochismo ("It's good to be on the inside): Jeff and Patrick
  • Don't Stop Boccelievin': Kate and Kristen
  • Team Tunes (We'd rather be curlin'): Chris and Bev
  • I'd Bocce That: Chris and Matty

Please submit your team names under the comments section of this post. Also, don't forget to suggest any places to potentially play. Just make sure that its easily accessable via the T without too much travel with space for all to play at the same time.

More Peeps

Due to an administrative error there was a person sadly left of the initial list. Therefore, it's my great pleasure to welcome him aboard with a couple extra faces. The more the merrier hopefully.

Welcome:
Sean
Sara
Tim
Caddie

This will completely finish up all the players for the league at a strong 24 people.

Urban Bocce Ball League Welcome

Welcome all to the Urban Bocce Ball League (UBBL). It's with great fanfare that we get this league off the ground finally.

  • The league will consist of multiple teams of two.
  • All games will be played on Thursday evenings at one various weekly location

Rules:

  • Roshambo to determine which team starts the game (Best of 3).
  • Roshambo winner tosses pallino and then its first bocce ball.
  • Team furthest from the pallino always shoots until they are closer than another team.
  • Closest bocce ball to pallino gets the point.
  • If two or more of the same teams balls are closest than score a point for each one.
  • Team scoring last shots first the next round and throws the pallino.
  • Games will be to eleven in a best of three series.
  • Must win match by two points.
  • Home team provides the bocce balls.

Requirements:

  • Each team must possess a bocce ball set.
  • Must be two players per team for a match. Sorry no solo conquests

Substitutions:

At least one team member must be present for each match. Therefore, a fill in guest player is allowed but cannot currently be on any other team in the league. A fill in guest can play no more than two matches with one particular team.

Locations:

Seeing as that this is an urban league there is no official home location. Therefore, we will be taking advantage of parks all across the Boston, Cambridge and Somerville areas.
The commissioner is currently accepting recommendations for places to play. Please send all ideas back with reasons why it’s a good place.
Current List of Possible Locations:

  • Boston Common
  • Cambridge Common
  • Danehy Park
  • Charles River Bike Path (Not on the path of course)
  • Charlesbank Park

Costs:

There will be a mandatory two dollar fee for each player to purchase a trophy for the league champion.

Game Etiquette:

The use of smack talk is not only encouraged but an important aspect of this league. We will not be repressing anyone’s creativity here so Journey psyche outs will be allowed.

Uniforms:

It’s highly recommended that your team create uniforms that reflect your team name using iron-on transfers or whatever means you can think of to make a sweet uni. Those who don’t make uniforms will constantly be ridiculed the entire season. The following are examples from the Beverly Hills League. They are a bit classier than what our league aims for but its gives you an idea in terms of matching and coordination (excellent job ladies).
